The Texas Parking & Transportation Association Annual Conference and Tradeshow kicked off March 25 at the Marriott Marquis Houston. The conference will run through March 29 with Mayor Sylvester Turner giving the keynote address at the annual awards luncheon on Thursday.

Close to 300 international Parking professionals have come to not only experience Houston southern hospitality but also make impactful connections for the Parking and transportation industry. During the four-day conference they will have an opportunity to tour some of Houston’s premier Parking structures, experience some of the latest innovations of exhibitors from around the world and attend numerous educational sessions.

“On behalf of the board of directors of the Texas Parking and Transportation Association and the College Station Host Committee, it is my pleasure to welcome all to the 31st Annual Conference and Trade Show,” said TPTA President Peter Lange. “The beautiful Marriott Marquis is the perfect place to gather, and the Houston team has done an excellent job in providing yet another spectacular event for our organization.”

While visiting beautiful downtown Houston, we cannot forget the tremendous strain and hardship Hurricane Harvey brought to the area. We thank our membership for participating in our food drive for the Houston Food Bank as part of our continued efforts to give back to our host community.

The Texas Parking and Transportation Association maintains a statewide association of individuals involved with parking-related business in municipalities, airports and universities and other organizations. For more information about TPTA, visit www.texasparking.org.

Ready….Set….Network!

TPTA wants to make sure that you have a FANTASTIC conference experience. Here are the top ten things to enhance your conference experience:

1. Bring business cards.

2. Walk the exhibit hall multiple times. The conference guide has the layout and listing of exhibitors. Check out the companies in advance. Come with questions about the products that interest you.

3. Don’t just hang out with friends. Make it a goal to meet 2-3 new people per day.

4. A good trick is to take notes about the other person on the back of their business card!

5. Take pictures! Use your phone to take pictures of old and new friends or parking innovations, then post them to the conference app social wall, Facebook, or Twitter @TexasParking, #TPTA2018

6. Look at the speaker list. Read their bios. Does their topic or background speak to one of your challenges?  If so, make it a goal to speak with them.

7. Talk to speakers before their presentation time. Everybody has questions after the presentation. Connect with them in advance! The conference guide has their pictures and bios for your benefit.

8. Download the conference app - you can see the attendee list, setup meetings with colleagues and personalize your schedule.

9. Have fun, enjoy the conference and bring lots of energy. There is time to sleep when you get back home!

10. Follow up with each person you meet after the conference. Connect on LinkedIn, send an email or a link to an interesting article.

We look forward to seeing you in Houston!

It's simple with the right people

For Houston, I believe 2017 will be remembered as the year of Harvey.  We saw what the storm did to homes and businesses.  We saw the community come together in the aftermath and lend a helping hand to those that had to rebuild.  And while we were rebuilding our personal lives, we had to figure out how to maintain our professional lives, as well.

How do you do that?  How do you concentrate on work and all of the things that need to get done on a daily basis, when you’re worried about sheetrock and roof damage?  As I found out, it’s pretty simple when you’ve got a great support team.  My entire team were willing to take that extra step, work that extra hour, so that we can get our lives back together.

Days after the storm, when I was still unable to return to my home, team members were able to make it to work, to take care of the things that needed doing.  They assisted customers, building staff, and management to ensure the garage functioned normally.  When I finally made it back to the office and had to alter my regular hours, it was an easy transition back to work for me.

It was a weight off my shoulders, knowing I wouldn’t be going back to a backlog of work; knowing that I didn’t need to worry about the day to day matters.  It’s a weight off my shoulders knowing that I work with colleagues who care.

Forever grateful,

Shannon Mayfield

Spreading holiday cheer

In all my time spent in parking, approximately 20 years, today I observed a first. Christmas came early in Houston when maintenance personnel purchased, assembled and installed holiday decorations in a local TMC garage for all parkers to see upon entering and exiting.  They really went above and beyond in showing their exceptional skills in decorating, but most important the ability to provide a wonderful display for everyone visiting the facility during the holiday season. With this facility servicing a hotel and medical clinic, they stepped up the parking game by decorating the support columns with garland and wreaths, hung stocking from the walls, attached elves to the cashier booth and placed a Christmas tree on the parking island between the two exit lanes. Everyone has provided plenty of positive compliments at seeing such a display when arriving at the garage and are even taking photos. Selfie anyone?
